I’ve never tried out a coolpix before so I can’t really recommend that for you!
I started out with a Nikon D40, and I bought mine brand new for around $400 4 years ago. AMAZING entry level camera.
Now, it goes around really cheap used. I sold mine for $250, and you could find a really good condition one online or on craigslist.
I had a $600 setup (Nikon D40 + 35mm 1.8) for 4 years and I’ve been able to take photos of some great stuff with amazing quality.
